One or Two Week Course in Florence, Italy

Date: TBD

We do not look for compromise; rather, we seek to resolve the conflict to everyone’s complete satisfaction.” – Marshall B. Rosenberg, PhD

Do you need to improve communication within your school, organization or company? Do your working relationships need a boost? This course focuses on achieving mutual understanding and transforming relationships between teachers, students, co-workers, clients, colleagues and, as a result, all relationships. We will draw upon group collaboration methodologies adapted from the performing arts, such as ensemble building used by directors in theatre and film. We will explore how these methodologies create a safe, happy, and functional organization that results in comradery, unity, and successful collaborative projects. Larger organizational groups of four or more are encouraged to enroll with specific projects, needs and goals; which we will all address together in a collaborative, supportive and fun learning environment.

“The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.” – Carl Gustav Jung

Methods from Conflict Resolution (adapted from NVC Non-Violent Communication), Active Listening (Carl Rogers), and the “Yes, and…” improvisational approach will be demonstrated and practiced with fun and interactive group activities.

Educators will learn how to facilitate a democratic classroom that stimulates meaningful and engaging discussions among students. Organization/Company Leaders will also learn how to stimulate interactive dialogues, execute effective brainstorming techniques, and facilitate democratic discussions between staff members in meetings that achieve mutual understanding, openness, forward-moving progress, and harmony. As a result, your workplace culture will be designed to be an environment that builds and nourishes relationships, fosters a higher standard of learning, increases administrative productivity, promotes creative contributions, and deals with conflicts between all parties with ease and effectiveness.

Interpersonal and intrapersonal communication skills are developed and increased significantly by the end of the course. Special attention will be given to identify and tailor the course to each institution’s unique needs and values. Feedback will also be given during collaborative projects, presentations, and the development of interpersonal communication strategies for each group.

Learning Outcomes

Participants to the course will learn to:

  • Stimulate meaningful and engaging discussions in the classroom, meetings, and anywhere while ensuring that everyone is heard;

  • Model and facilitate deeper listening skills resulting in improved collaboration, group dynamics, and collective learning;

  • Practice deep listening to validate staff, co-workers, and students’ needs and thereby earning others’ trust and confidence in one’s leadership;

  • Cultivate empathy among co-workers and students while fostering an appreciation for different perspectives;

  • Lead circles of reflective listening and discussions that harvest the entire group’s insights. Resulting in a combined effect that is greater than the sum of each individual’s separate contributions;

  • Create a climate that is conducive to collaboration by listening to and validating each participant’s needs within each step of the collaborative process;

  • Recognize good collaborations and build on them successfully, as well as identify behaviors that undermine collaboration and adjust them before they lead to dysfunctional collaborations;

  • Implement approaches to de-escalating and resolving conflicts in a way that prevents harm to relationships and promotes comradery;

  • Utilize listening to solve hidden problems that would otherwise remain unsolved and thus make contributions to the institution’s community;
